New Songs of the Open Road

May 18 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

| Free

New Songs Of The Open Road is a special project designed by artist/curator, Homer Jackson of the Philadelphia Jazz Project, as part of Whitman At 200 – the celebration of Walt Whitman’s 200th Birthday hosted by University of Pennsylvania Libraries Kislak Center. Our project consists of a series of “singing” walks that take place in different sections of Philadelphia. These walks involve choirs, as well as the general public who are invited to participate. The walks are inspired by the civil rights protest marchers of the 1960s, as well as by Whitman’s poem, “Song of the Open Road” which contemplates the possibilities of American freedom. For more information, visit whitmanat200.org.

We will disembark from Mander Recreation Center and walk around the East Park Reservoir carrying banners and singing songs of affirmation. 45 minutes or so later, we will arrive back at Mander and the event will conclude.
